My group decided to loan money to a woman named Yawavi Ameko.  She is a hairstylist in the small west african country of Togo.  She owns her own salon which she opened in 1988.  She is a widowed mother of four.  Clearly she has alot of responsibility.

She needed the loan in order to purchase extensions and hair weaves.  There has been an increasing demand for her services and she wants to keep up with it.  In chapter 3 it talks about the two views in management theory, the omnipotent and symbolic view.  According to the omnipotent view , the success or failure of a business is completely in the hands of the manager. Now usually I am completely against that idea.  However, in Yawavi’s case,I would say that view fits her more so than the symbolic view.

In most cases managers have to deal with tons of competition which has a huge impact on the success or failure of a business.  But in her case, she lives in such a small place where most of the business has to do with agricultural needs, that she doesnt have much competition.  In my opinion if she gets the materials that she needs and continues to provide the best service possible she will be in business.  Its in her hands.  With that said, she needs to have great business practices in order to provide the best services.  Thats where having a strong culture comes into play.

In my opinion having a strong culture is like the foundation of a good organization or business.  The culture of  a business is the way that things are done basically.  That includes the values, principles, rules , regulations, and traditions of a business.  Yawavi’s first step in building or creating that strong culture is hiring people that share some of her same ideas and beliefs.  The people that work  for her have to be on board with what she is trying to accomplish.  Running a business is never easy but in her case, if she stays focused and surrounds herself with the right people, i believe she will succeed.

Very true, I would also say that the omnipotent view would suit her just right. My idea of her creating a strong business would be not only hiring people with the same beliefs I would try to do some type of advertisment as well. Be it people who’s hair she has done passing out flyers or going door to door.

True…Usually the whole door to door thing wouldnt be all that effective…But in her case, with living in such a small area, door to door advertising would be beneficial. It wouldnt cost her anything and it would be getting the word out about her business.

This blog is very helpful. I strongly agree that the omnipotent view would best fit her needs. Your recipient should look at the different environments as well. The main ones are the external, specific, and general. Since she does live in a small area I think the best one for her is to use specific environment because then she will look at the costumers, suppliers, and maybe a competitor. All of these will have a direct impact on the managers’ decisions, and actions which are relevant to achieve her business goals. You did a good job in explaining why omnipotent view is better than symbolic view.

I believe the same as you best lady, the omnipotent view would allow her to be the reason why her business was a success. I do agree with newb2008 as well when it was stated that culture is important, every business needs culture to survive. This will influence on how the organiztion will act.

I agree with you point. She lives in such a small place and therefore the omnipotent & symbolic view would suit her the best. However I would say that she should have a strong culture to keep her business running for a longer time and I wish her all the best for it.

I agree right with you the omipotent view does apply to her in this case. Like you I’m often against the omnipotent view but as you stated where your enviorment is can cahnge as to what affects your business. She can also make sure that her culture is somewhat welcoming of other’s people. Since there are so many different cultures in Africa she wants to make sure that her place is welcoming and not uninvitning to potenital customers.

The omnipotent view, I think, definitely applies to her situation. I’m sure being in a small town means that she is probably one of the only ones, if not the only one that does what she does. It is up to her to keep up a good reputation and business-like manner, because if she falters, so does her business. A lot of people count on her and she has a lot of responsibility.
